Baking Soda Scrub

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is one of the most versatile and toxicologically benign cleaning agents available. It functions as a mild abrasive, a deodorizer, and a pH buffer. As an abrasive, the crystals are hard enough to dislodge grime and mineral deposits from most surfaces but soft enough (Mohs hardness around 2.5) that they don't scratch glass, porcelain, most ceramics, or stainless steel. They will scratch highly polished surfaces or soft plastics, so testing on an inconspicuous area is still worthwhile.

The deodorizing action is chemical: baking soda is amphoteric, meaning it reacts with and neutralizes both acidic and basic odor-causing compounds. This is why it absorbs refrigerator odors, neutralizes pet urine smell, and reduces bathroom odors more effectively than fragrance-based masking products, which only layer scent on top of smell without addressing the source.

Sodium bicarbonate poses essentially no health concerns in normal household use. It's used in food, antacids, and medical applications, and the safety profile for skin contact and incidental ingestion is well established. There is no meaningful inhalation concern from normal application. This makes it the default first choice for abrasive cleaning tasks where chemical concerns are a priority — particularly for households with young children, people with chemical sensitivities, or anyone wanting to reduce the overall chemical load in the home.

For practical effectiveness: baking soda works best as a paste mixed with just enough water to create a spreadable consistency. Apply, let sit for 5–10 minutes on set-in grime or stains, then scrub with a damp cloth and rinse. Combining with a small amount of dish soap adds surfactant action for greasy surfaces. For whitening grout, a baking soda paste applied and left for 15 minutes before scrubbing outperforms most commercial grout cleaners without any bleach exposure.
