Editor's Note

One of the most inert steaming options — no coatings, no metal, just bamboo. Dry thoroughly after each use to prevent mold growth.

Safety Guide: Bamboo Steamer Basket

Bamboo steamers are made from a grass (bamboo is technically a grass, not wood) with inherently antimicrobial properties, minimal chemical processing, and no synthetic coatings. The cooking food contacts only the bamboo itself — no metals, no fluoropolymers, nothing synthetic. From a chemical inertness perspective, bamboo steaming is about as clean as it gets.

The practical concern with bamboo is biological rather than chemical: mold and bacteria. Bamboo is porous and retains moisture readily. A steamer basket that is used, then stored slightly damp or in a confined cabinet, can develop mold growth between uses. The mold is superficial and visible, but food cooked over a moldy steamer can pick up musty flavors and potentially mold spores.

The prevention is simple: after use, rinse the steamer, then air-dry it completely before storing. Place it in an open position — don't stack lid-down immediately — and allow several hours of air drying before storing in a cabinet. Some cooks sun-dry their bamboo steamers periodically, which both dries and UV-disinfects them. A musty or off-odor from the steamer is a signal to dry it more thoroughly before next use or to inspect for visible mold.

Bamboo steamers are typically used nested in or over a wok or pot with simmering water below. The basket never contacts the water directly. The steam rising from the water is the cooking medium — completely pure water vapor. This makes the steaming process itself essentially the cleanest cooking method in terms of food-surface chemistry, as long as the bamboo is well maintained.

Is Bamboo Steamer Basket safe?

Bamboo Steamer Basket is rated Best — one of our top-recommended options for a low-tox home. The materials are considered among the safest available for this use case.

Key concerns at a glance:

  • Can harbor bacteria if not dried thoroughly after use; air dry completely
  • May stain with repeated use; this is cosmetic only
