More abrasive and harsher than Bon Ami. The chlorine component is effective but adds respiratory concerns. Bon Ami or baking soda handle most scrubbing tasks without the chlorine.

Safety Guide: Comet Powder Cleanser

Comet Powder Cleanser is an abrasive cleaner that gets its whitening and disinfecting power from sodium dichloroisocyanurate, a chlorine-releasing compound. It is effective at removing hard water deposits, rust stains, and mildew. The concern with regular use is the chlorine component, which generates low levels of chlorine gas fumes when it contacts water — a chemical exposure that is easy to underestimate during routine sink and tub scrubbing.

The powder format adds an inhalation hazard that liquid or gel cleaners do not have: as you shake or apply the powder, fine particles become airborne and can be inhaled directly. The fragrance added to Comet compounds this, delivering both synthetic VOCs and chlorine fume exposure simultaneously. People with asthma, reactive airway disease, or fragrance sensitivities should avoid using this product indoors without strong ventilation.

If you do use Comet, open the window and run the exhaust fan before you begin. Apply the powder to a wet surface rather than a dry one to minimize airborne dust. Wear gloves and avoid touching your face during application. Never mix Comet with ammonia-based cleaners, bleach-based sprays, or vinegar — any acid added to a chlorine-releasing compound accelerates chlorine gas generation.

Bon Ami Powder Cleanser uses only feldspar and calcium carbonate — no chlorine, no fragrance — and handles the same scrubbing tasks with a much lower risk profile. Plain baking soda paste is another safe option for regular scrubbing. Reserve Comet for situations where disinfection and stubborn stain removal are both genuinely needed and alternatives have not worked.

Is Comet Powder Cleanser safe?

Comet Powder Cleanser is rated Use Caution. It's not our top pick for a low-tox home, but with mindful use — following manufacturer guidelines, replacing when worn, and avoiding high-heat or abrasive conditions — the risks may be manageable for some households.

Key concerns at a glance:

  • Contains chlorine-releasing compounds; generates chlorine gas fumes, especially in warm water
  • Fragrance in a powder format means inhalation exposure during application
