Ecover is a Belgian company that has been formulating plant-based cleaning products since 1980, and its dish soap reflects a genuine commitment to biodegradable chemistry rather than just marketing language. The surfactant base uses plant-derived ingredients — primarily from coconut and corn — rather than petroleum-derived alkyl sulfates. The formula is phosphate-free, which matters for aquatic ecosystems: phosphates in wastewater contribute to algal blooms that deplete oxygen in waterways. For biodegradability, Ecover's formulas are generally among the better-performing options in this category.

The main concerns center on preservatives and fragrance. Ecover uses synthetic preservatives to maintain shelf stability — typically methylisothiazolinone (MI) or benzisothiazolinone in some product variants. MI is a recognized skin sensitizer and has been restricted in leave-on cosmetic products in Europe, though it remains permitted at low concentrations in rinse-off products like dish soap. For most users this is a low-risk ingredient at the concentrations used; for people with known MI sensitivity or skin conditions, the fragrance-free and preservative-minimal variants are the better choice.

Fragrance is the other variable. Ecover offers both scented and fragrance-free dish soap. The scented variants use parfum blends that are not fully disclosed on the label — standard practice, but it means you cannot evaluate the specific fragrance chemicals in use. For households with fragrance sensitivities, allergies, or young children, the unscented version is the clear recommendation. The cleaning performance of the fragrance-free version is identical to the scented variants.

For overall ingredient quality, Ecover sits comfortably in the 'better' category — a meaningful step up from conventional dish soaps like Dawn in terms of surfactant sourcing and phosphate content, though not quite at the level of fully transparent, EWG-verified products like Attitude or Branch Basics.
