Kraft Paper Lunch Bag

Uncoated kraft paper bags are one of the safest single-use food contact materials available. Kraft paper is made from wood pulp processed through the kraft (sulfate) method, which produces strong, brown paper without synthetic coatings or chemical treatments in its basic form. The paper itself does not contain plasticizers, bisphenols, or PFAS. For carrying dry lunch items — sandwiches, crackers, fruit — it works effectively without any chemical concern.

The important caveat is grease-resistant paper bags. Bags marketed as grease-resistant, moisture-resistant, or water-resistant may use PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) coatings to achieve these properties. PFAS are a class of fluorinated compounds used extensively in food packaging for their oil and water barrier properties. They are persistent in the environment and in human tissue, and several PFAS compounds have been linked to thyroid disruption, immune effects, and cancer in human epidemiological studies. The food packaging sector is one of the primary dietary PFAS exposure routes for the general population.

Regulation of PFAS in food packaging is evolving. The US FDA has phased out certain specific PFAS compounds used in food contact applications, and several states have passed legislation requiring PFAS-free food packaging. Many manufacturers have moved to alternative coatings, but verification requires either explicit 'PFAS-free' labeling or direct confirmation from the manufacturer.

For plain uncoated kraft paper bags with no grease-resistance claims or coatings, the safety profile is excellent. They biodegrade, compost, and are recyclable with paper. For households packing lunches regularly, a stainless steel or glass container eliminates both the PFAS question and the single-use waste of paper bags — but for situations where disposable packaging is practical, uncoated kraft paper is the cleanest single-use choice.
