Tritan Plastic Food Container

Tritan is a copolyester plastic developed by Eastman Chemical and released in 2007, positioned specifically as a BPA-free alternative to polycarbonate. It does not contain bisphenol A, bisphenol S, or bisphenol F, and it has been cleared by regulatory agencies in the US and EU as a food-contact material. For households moving away from polycarbonate, Tritan is a meaningfully different material — the absence of bisphenol chemistry is genuine.

The ongoing scientific discussion around Tritan concerns potential estrogenic activity (EA) from its component monomers. A 2011 study in Environmental Health tested various plastics including Tritan and found EA from some samples. Eastman conducted its own studies showing no EA and challenged the methodology of the earlier research. Subsequent independent studies have produced mixed results. The regulatory consensus has not changed — Tritan remains approved — but the scientific question is not fully settled in the peer-reviewed literature.

From a practical standpoint, Tritan performs well as a food container material in everyday cold and room-temperature use. It is durable, transparent, and maintains structural integrity in the dishwasher much better than polypropylene. The risk profile, whatever the actual magnitude, is most relevant for hot food contact and extended storage of fatty or acidic foods — the same conditions that increase leaching from any plastic.

For the lowest-uncertainty food storage choice, glass and stainless steel are the options with the clearest safety record — they have been used as food contact materials for decades without any leaching concerns arising. Tritan is a reasonable choice for uses where glass would be impractical (children's items, travel, outdoor use) while maintaining a clear advantage over polycarbonate. But it is still a plastic, and for everyday home food storage, glass containers at comparable price points are available.
