Editor's Note

A cleaner choice than ammonia-based Windex, but vinegar and water in a spray bottle does the same job without the fragrance and surfactant load.

Safety Guide: Windex Ammonia-Free Glass Cleaner

Windex Ammonia-Free Glass Cleaner removes ammonia from the formula, which is genuinely an improvement — ammonia fumes are irritating and the product cannot be used safely on tinted windows or screens when ammonia is present. The ammonia-free version relies on isopropyl alcohol, surfactants, and water to achieve streak-free cleaning, and it works effectively on glass, mirrors, and hard surfaces.

The remaining concerns are more modest: synthetic fragrance and isopropyl alcohol fumes. Neither is a serious health hazard for occasional use, but in an enclosed bathroom or closet space, isopropyl alcohol volatilizes quickly and the fumes can be irritating at higher concentrations. The fragrance provides no cleaning benefit and is the main source of VOC exposure. People with asthma, fragrance sensitivities, or who clean frequently in small spaces should weigh this.

For most household window and mirror cleaning, plain white vinegar diluted 1:1 with water in a spray bottle is genuinely equivalent. It costs almost nothing, has no fragrance, leaves no synthetic residue, and cleans glass streak-free. Add a small amount of rubbing alcohol if you need faster evaporation in humid conditions. This is one of the few DIY cleaning swaps that fully replicates the commercial product at lower cost and lower exposure.

If you prefer a commercial product, Seventh Generation Free and Clear glass cleaner or ATTITUDE fragrance-free window spray both provide comparable cleaning without synthetic fragrance. For automotive glass or tinted windows, confirm any cleaner is marked safe for tint before applying.

Is Windex Ammonia-Free Glass Cleaner safe?

Windex Ammonia-Free Glass Cleaner is rated Use Caution. It's not our top pick for a low-tox home, but with mindful use — following manufacturer guidelines, replacing when worn, and avoiding high-heat or abrasive conditions — the risks may be manageable for some households.

Key concerns at a glance:

  • Still contains synthetic fragrance and surfactant blend
  • Isopropyl alcohol fumes in enclosed spaces; ventilate when cleaning inside
