Safety Guide: Abeego Beeswax Food Wrap
Abeego beeswax wraps are made from organic cotton fabric infused with a blend of beeswax, tree resin, and jojoba oil. This combination makes the wrap slightly tacky and moldable with the warmth of your hands, allowing it to conform to bowls, cut produce, and cheese. All materials are natural, food-safe, and compostable at the end of the product's life.
The safety profile is excellent. There are no synthetic chemicals, plasticizers, or petroleum-derived coatings involved. The beeswax and tree resin create a naturally antibacterial surface. Jojoba oil conditions the cotton fibers. These materials have centuries of use in food preservation contexts. From a toxicology standpoint, beeswax wraps have essentially no concerning exposures.
The important use restrictions are not safety concerns but practical limitations. Do not use beeswax wrap with raw meat — the wrap cannot be sanitized effectively and cross-contamination risk makes this inappropriate. Do not expose it to heat: the wax melts above approximately 50-55 degrees Celsius (120-130 degrees Fahrenheit), so it should not be used in the microwave or to cover hot dishes. Cold and room-temperature foods are the correct application.
To care for beeswax wraps, wash them with cool water and a small amount of dish soap, then air dry. Avoid hot water, which will melt the wax coating. With proper care, a beeswax wrap will last 6 to 12 months of regular use before the wax coating diminishes. At end of life, it can be composted or cut into small pieces for use as fire starters.
