PVC plastic cling wrap contains plasticizers — most commonly DEHA or DEHA-related compounds — that soften the plastic and give it its characteristic cling. These plasticizers are known to migrate into food, particularly into fatty foods like cheese, meat, and oily leftovers. While PVDC-based wraps have fewer plasticizer concerns, most consumer cling wraps are PVC-based, and the migration risk with fatty foods and heat is well-documented.
Abeego beeswax wrap uses certified organic cotton coated with a blend of beeswax, tree resin, and jojoba oil. None of these ingredients are synthetic chemicals, and none have documented migration concerns into food. Abeego is compostable at end of life, generates no microplastic waste, and lasts up to a year with proper care. The limitation is that beeswax wraps cannot be used with raw meat (cross-contamination risk) and should not contact hot food.
For wrapping produce, cheese, bread, and leftovers in bowls, Abeego is the clearly safer choice. It rates 'best'; cling wrap rates 'caution.' The practical limitation of beeswax wrap — no raw meat, no hot food — is manageable with separate containers for those uses. For all other food wrapping applications, Abeego eliminates the plasticizer migration concern entirely.
