Plastic food containers leach chemicals into food — the rate depends on the plastic type, temperature, food acidity, and physical wear. Bisphenol A (BPA) is the most studied: it mimics estrogen and has been linked to hormonal disruption, particularly in fetal development and children. In response to consumer pressure, many manufacturers switched to BPA-free alternatives — but BPS and BPF, the most common replacements, show similar estrogenic activity in cell studies. Scratched, cloudy, or heat-stressed plastic leaches more, regardless of BPA status.

Microwaving food in plastic is the highest-risk scenario: heat accelerates leaching significantly. Even containers labeled "microwave-safe" are certified only to not warp or melt — not to be chemically inert under heat. Acidic foods (tomato, citrus, vinegar-based dishes) stored in plastic also accelerate migration compared to neutral foods.

The safest storage hierarchy is: borosilicate glass first, then 304/316 stainless steel, then food-grade platinum silicone, then plastic only as a last resort for room-temperature, non-acidic, short-term storage.
