PVC / PVDC Plastic Cling Wrap
Use cautionWrapping food and covering bowls in the fridge or microwave
Materials Used
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC)
Common Marketing Claims
- Clings on contact
- Airtight seal
- Microwave safe
Editor's Note
Avoid direct contact with fatty foods and microwave use. Beeswax wraps, silicone lids, or reusable containers are better alternatives for regular use.
Safety Guide: PVC / PVDC Plastic Cling Wrap
Plastic cling wrap sold for consumer use is most commonly made from either polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC). These materials require plasticizers to achieve the flexibility and cling that make them functional as wrap — rigid PVC and PVDC are brittle materials. The plasticizers used to soften PVC for cling wrap applications have historically included compounds from the phthalate family, which are endocrine-disrupting chemicals with documented effects on hormonal systems in laboratory studies.
The concern is not the PVC polymer itself but the plasticizer migration from wrap into food. Migration is greatest with fatty foods — cheese, meat, oily leftovers — because the plasticizer compounds are lipophilic (fat-soluble) and transfer more readily into fat-rich food surfaces. Heat further accelerates migration, making microwaving food directly covered with PVC cling wrap a particularly high-risk combination.
PVDC (Saran Wrap's original formula until the formulation changed in 2004) was a different chemistry — harder and more barrier-effective than PVC, but raised its own manufacturing and disposal concerns. Most consumer PVDC wraps have been reformulated. Modern Saran Wrap and similar products have largely shifted to low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which requires no plasticizers and presents a lower migration risk.
For households transitioning away from cling wrap, the replacements that cover most use cases are: silicone stretch lids (for covering bowls and pots), beeswax wraps (for produce, cheese, and cut vegetables), and stainless or glass containers with lids (for leftovers). For the specific use case of covering containers in the fridge without opening them, a silicone lid or plate over the bowl achieves the same result without any plastic food contact.
Is PVC / PVDC Plastic Cling Wrap safe?
PVC / PVDC Plastic Cling Wrap is rated Use Caution. It's not our top pick for a low-tox home, but with mindful use — following manufacturer guidelines, replacing when worn, and avoiding high-heat or abrasive conditions — the risks may be manageable for some households.
Key concerns at a glance:
- PVC cling wraps contain plasticizers (some phthalates) that can migrate into fatty foods
- Microwaving fatty foods in contact with PVC wrap increases migration risk
