Borax Laundry Booster

Borax (sodium tetraborate or sodium borate) is a naturally occurring mineral compound that has been used as a laundry booster for over a century. It raises water pH, which improves the performance of detergents; it softens hard water by binding calcium and magnesium ions; and it has mild antibacterial properties. These functions make it genuinely useful in laundry, particularly in households with hard water where detergents underperform.

The concern with borax centers on its toxicity profile at concentrated exposures, which is meaningfully different from the diluted exposure in a laundry wash. Borax is irritating to mucous membranes and the respiratory tract if inhaled as dry powder — a legitimate risk when scooping from the box. It is toxic if ingested in significant amounts, which is the primary risk for small children or pets who might access an open box. The EU classified it as a reproductive toxicant in 2010, though that designation was based on animal studies at high doses and remains debated in the context of consumer laundry use.

In the wash itself, borax is highly diluted and rinses out with the wash water. Residual exposure from properly rinsed clothing is minimal. The risks are concentrated at the handling and storage stage, not at the skin-contact-with-laundered-fabric stage.

Practical safety steps: use a measuring scoop rather than your hand, wash hands after handling, store borax in a sealed container out of reach of children and pets, and don't mix it into DIY formulas without understanding the total concentration. As a laundry booster used in the machine's detergent compartment, the risk profile is caution — not avoidance — for most adult households.
