Simple Powder Laundry Detergent

Powder laundry detergents have a meaningful structural advantage over liquid formulas: they don't require liquid preservatives. Preservatives like methylisothiazolinone (MI) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI) are added to liquid detergents to prevent microbial growth in the water-based formula. Both are well-documented skin sensitizers — MI in particular was named Contact Allergen of the Year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society in 2013. Powder formulas are dry and stable without these additives, which is why the ingredient list is often shorter.

The typical clean powder formula contains washing soda (sodium carbonate), which softens water and boosts pH for cleaning; baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) as a mild alkaline buffer; and a minimal surfactant blend. Some add sodium percarbonate for oxygen-bleach action on stains. This is close to what you'd formulate if building a laundry detergent from scratch with ingredient safety as the priority.

The practical consideration with powders is dissolution. In cold water, powder can clump or leave undissolved residue on dark fabrics if added directly to the drum. The fix is simple: dissolve the powder in a cup of warm water first, then add it to the machine before loading clothes. Alternatively, warm or hot water cycles dissolve powder reliably without pre-mixing.

For households with hard water, powder detergents work better with a small addition of washing soda or citric acid to neutralize minerals that would otherwise interfere with cleaning. This is the chemistry behind commercial laundry boosters — you can replicate it with inexpensive pantry ingredients.
