Fragrance-Free Liquid Detergent

Fragrance-free liquid detergents eliminate the single biggest chemical concern in conventional laundry products — synthetic fragrance — while keeping the surfactant chemistry that actually does the cleaning. For most households making a first step toward lower-tox laundry, this is the most impactful swap available.

The core cleaning agents are surfactants, typically a blend of anionic surfactants (like sodium lauryl sulfate or its ethoxylated variants) and non-ionic surfactants. Anionic surfactants are effective at lifting oils and soil from fabric. They rinse out in the wash cycle, which limits skin contact. The concern with liquid detergents isn't the surfactants themselves so much as the additives — preservatives, stabilizers, and processing aids that appear in smaller amounts on the label.

High-efficiency (HE) machines require low-sudsing formulas, and most modern fragrance-free liquid detergents are HE-compatible. Over-dosing in HE machines is the most common misuse: excess detergent doesn't rinse out fully, leaving residue on fabric that can irritate sensitive skin and builds up in the machine drum over time. Following the dosing lines or using slightly less than recommended is better practice.

For the cleanest profile, look for third-party certifications: EWG Verified or EPA Safer Choice signal that the formula has been reviewed against a meaningful ingredient standard. NSF/ANSI 305 certification covers natural claims. These labels don't guarantee perfection, but they indicate a brand willing to submit to external scrutiny — a useful filter when comparing options on store shelves.
