Heavily Scented Laundry Detergent vs. Fragrance-Free Liquid Detergent

Heavily scented laundry detergents contain synthetic fragrance blends — listed simply as 'fragrance' or 'parfum' on the label — that can include dozens of undisclosed compounds such as phthalates, musks, and allergens. Because laundry residue stays in direct contact with skin all day, these chemicals have more exposure opportunity than most other household products. Studies have linked synthetic laundry fragrance to skin irritation, respiratory effects, and endocrine disruption in sensitive individuals.

Fragrance-free liquid detergents contain the same cleaning surfactants but skip the fragrance package entirely. They still typically include optical brighteners and preservatives, so they are not zero-concern — but removing synthetic fragrance eliminates the largest variable ingredient class and the greatest allergen risk.

For everyday laundry, especially for children, people with sensitive skin, or anyone with respiratory sensitivities, fragrance-free detergent is the clearly safer choice. The cleaning performance is identical; the only thing you lose is the scent.
