Professional dry cleaning uses a solvent — historically perchloroethylene (PERC), increasingly newer solvents like liquid CO2 or GreenEarth silicone — to dissolve and remove oil-based soils and stains from fabrics that cannot be safely wetted. Dryel works entirely differently: the kit includes dryer-activated cloths that heat and release steam and light cleaning agents, which refreshes fabric appearance and deodorizes garments through heat and mild solvent action, without the solvent immersion that characterizes true dry cleaning.

The functional limitation is significant. Dryel cannot remove set stains, embedded soil, or the body oils that accumulate in fabric over time. What it does do is reduce wrinkles, remove mild surface odors, and make dry-clean-only items feel refreshed between professional cleaning cycles. For items that are not actually dirty but need a refresh before wearing again — a blazer worn once, a dress worn briefly — it serves this purpose reasonably well.

The chemical concern is the fragrance in the dryer cloths. The 'clean' scent is applied via fragrance compounds on the heated cloth, which deposit on garments during the dryer cycle. Because Dryel is used specifically on clothing that contacts skin closely — formal wear, delicate blouses, fine knitwear — the fragrance deposition pathway is direct. Unlike laundering where rinse cycles dilute chemical residues, Dryel deposits fragrance without any rinse step.

For households that dry-clean regularly and want a between-cleaning refresh option, Dryel's convenience is real. The fragrance concern can be partially addressed by removing garments from the dryer before the full cycle completes, reducing heat-set fragrance deposition. For a fragrance-free refresh, steaming with a handheld garment steamer achieves similar wrinkle and odor reduction with no chemical deposit at all.
