Wool Dryer Balls

Wool dryer balls are among the few laundry accessories that work entirely through a physical mechanism rather than a chemical one. The balls tumble with clothes in the dryer, separating fabric pieces so hot air circulates more evenly, physically agitating fibers to reduce stiffness, and absorbing and releasing moisture in a way that reduces static buildup. No coating, no fragrance, no surfactant chemistry — just felted wool doing mechanical work.

The primary material concern is lanolin, the natural oil present in wool. Most people tolerate lanolin well, but individuals with lanolin sensitivity or diagnosed wool allergies can react to dryer balls with skin irritation or contact dermatitis on areas where treated clothing contacts skin. This is worth knowing for households with known wool or lanolin sensitivities; for everyone else, it's not a practical concern.

Wool dryer balls do not replace the cleaning function of detergent — they reduce static, soften fabric mechanically, and shorten dry time, which is what liquid softener and dryer sheets claim to do. For households that want fragrance, a couple of drops of essential oil applied directly to a dryer ball (and allowed to absorb for a few minutes before adding clothes) is a simple, controlled-dose alternative to synthetic fragrance sheets. The dose is visible and chosen, unlike the complex fragrance blend in a commercial sheet.

A practical note on sizing: three balls in a large load is the minimum for noticeable effect; six balls in a large load gives better separation and noticeably faster drying. Wool dryer balls typically last 1,000 or more drying cycles — several years in most households — making them one of the most cost-effective laundry upgrades over time.
