Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate)

Washing soda — sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) — is one of the most useful and least chemically concerning ingredients in household laundry. It's a naturally occurring mineral compound (mined as trona ore or derived from sodium chloride) that functions through alkaline chemistry: dissolved in water, it raises pH to around 11, which improves surfactant performance and helps solubilize soil and grease. It's also a water softener, binding the calcium and magnesium ions in hard water that would otherwise compete with detergent molecules and reduce cleaning effectiveness.

The safety profile of washing soda is straightforward for finished laundry: it rinses out completely during the wash cycle and leaves no residue on fabric. The concern is at the handling stage. Sodium carbonate in powder or concentrated solution form is highly alkaline — pH 11–12 — and is irritating to skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract with direct contact or inhalation. Wearing gloves when scooping the powder is the practical precaution. It should be stored in a sealed container out of reach of children, where accidental ingestion is a concern.

Washing soda is incompatible with delicate protein fibers — wool, silk, cashmere, and other animal fibers. The high pH disrupts the hydrogen bonds in protein fiber structures, causing shrinkage, felting, and texture degradation. For these fabrics, a pH-neutral detergent formulated specifically for delicates is appropriate.

As a laundry booster in standard cotton and synthetic-fiber washes, washing soda is an excellent, clean-ingredient additive. Adding 2–4 tablespoons to the wash with detergent is particularly effective in hard-water areas where detergent performance is compromised by mineral interference. It's also a key ingredient in DIY powder detergent formulas, where it replaces the commercial water-softening agents in conventional products.
