HexClad and the Our Place Always Pan are both premium non-stick products marketed toward health-conscious households — but their coating chemistries are fundamentally different. HexClad uses PTFE in its hexagonal non-stick valleys. The Our Place Always Pan uses a sol-gel ceramic coating (Thermakind) that is entirely PTFE-free and PFAS-free. This is the most important distinction: one contains fluoropolymers, one does not.
At high heat, HexClad's PTFE valleys can release fumes if the pan is pushed above 500°F — a real risk for any pan left preheating on a gas burner. The Always Pan's ceramic coating does not release toxic fumes at high temperatures, even if accidentally overheated. For households with pet birds (especially sensitive to PTFE fumes), children in the kitchen, or cooks who regularly cook at high heat, this difference matters.
The Always Pan is rated 'better,' HexClad is rated 'caution.' The ceramic coating makes the Always Pan the safer choice between the two. HexClad's stainless ridges give it a durability edge, but that engineering advantage does not offset the fluoropolymer concerns introduced by the PTFE valleys. For a premium non-stick pan without PTFE, the Always Pan is the more defensible safety choice.
