Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats), widely used as disinfectants, are skin and airway sensitizers and have been associated with reproductive toxicity in animal studies. The key markers to look for: fragrance-free or using only essential oils with full disclosure, no quats (benzalkonium chloride, DDAC), and no aerosol format (which increases inhalation exposure). Third-party certifications like EPA Safer Choice or EWG Verified are useful signals, though not the only measure.
